Between the Wind and the Rain

Story

This had been no more than a title in my notebook for almost a year. Eventually I expanded on the idea after seeing "Twelfth Night"--the rondeley at the end uses "heigh ho, the wind and the rain" as a refrain. Some time later I added the image of a tree standing through storms and good weather. It took some exposure to live professional folk musicians to get a start on the music, but at that point it all came together.

Lyrics

[am] I see it all in a [F/a] flash
But it’s the [G] darkness that seems to [am] last
It’s [F] cold, and the lights are [E] out
[am] As I look out the [Bb] window

My [Eb] gaze is drawn past the [Bb] garden and lawn
Through [F] sheets of rain up to the [gm] hill
I can [C] feel the branches [Cmaj7] thrashing around
[C7] Then the flash shows me the old [F] willow
[am] Frozen [G] So still
Between the [dm7] wind and the rain there is [Gsus] peace
[G] There is [F/C] peace [C]

I was once a young boy
The days were calm and dry
And sometimes dreams will come
Of fields in the sun

But when I wake the clouds are waiting
Every day the wind blows harder
It gusts and falls and leaves us with
The pools of quiet water
Liquid mirrors
Between the wind and the rain there is peace
Peace

Well the wind is a force
Without a steady course
And it tries to shape the world
To its ever-changing goal

The rain is meant to be content
To follow the other’s whim
It falls and rolls and splashes and flows
Some people are rain, some wind
Not you, not me
Between the wind and the rain there is peace
Peace
There is peace
Peace
