The Collision of Carbon and GermaniumStoryThe basic idea here is "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"--what is the reaction of the conservative groups to a love between a human and an alien? The title refers to a set of stories I'm writing. One of the races is a Germanium-based organism, because it has the same valence as Carbon and Silicon, but Carbon is us and Silicon just gives you rocks. A love triangle develops, so that was the kernel that anchored this idea for a song. For this song, I D-tune the guitar (DADGAE). The entire verse is played with open strings, and the chords at the chorus have that extra fullness. The bottom D string stays "on" through the whole piece--a technique called "pedal point".
LyricsThey say a single force createdEvery living thing All people were put in their place And none shall go between Well a mountain of faith washes into the sea When the waves of emotion ride high Love shines on the soul with a blinding heat And your heart is in the sky When an angel slips from the head of a pin Do you hear a scream as he falls? When a spirit shatters in a gust of wind Is there anything left at all? The taste of love is bittersweet And there’s a special flavour When Nature Herself forbids you To be with whom you favour They say our love’s unnatural Unholy and inhuman It’s true, and the Church says Apocalypse comes from our union Let the mountains fall down, let them wash over me Let the waves of emotion ride high Let the sun shine on the rivers as they flow to the sea Let our hearts be in the sky If the moon hit a star, would it make any sound As the fisherman walks on the earth And the shards of the shattered light rain down And the last becomes the first Lyrics index
