Last Night of the Cretaceous

Story

When I was a grad student in Geology, a classmate and I came up with this idea for a department T-shirt. We'd just been through a series of presentations on the various theories surrounding the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous. It might have been an asteroid impact, or lots of volcanic eruptions, or a disintegration of the food chain from the bottom up.

Regardless of the truth, when we wanted to have a little fun with it, we made it into a party, with dinosaurs in baseball caps drinking beer and dancing like there's no tomorrow, which for them was true. It'll happen to us someday. Oh well, what are ya gonna do?

Lyrics

Well the [E] date’s December thirty-first, [f#min] 65 Million [B] B.C. [E]
And the party that we’re throwing tonight is the [F#] biggest in history [B]
You can [c#min] cry or deny, or just [B] run away,
But you [F#] can’t escape Judgement Day [B]
Oh [E] anyway, it’s more fun to be in the [f#min] middle of [B] catastrophe [E]

[E] Meteor's in the sky
[A] Volcano's raining [E] fire
And the [A] algal bloom is [E] washing in
In the [F#] masque of the red [B] tide
Bring your [E] own and with the dawn
[A] Two thirds of the [E] food chain's gone
It's our [A] final day; I've got [E] something to say
Burn [f#min] out, don't [B] fade away

The biggest party animals in history are making the earth move
Even the mammals cowering in caves are getting into the groove
A comet tail curves o’er the moon
Like a spiral ammonite
Hold my hand in the gath’ring gloom;
We won’t see morning’s light.

Meteor's in the sky
Volcano's raining fire
And the algal bloom is washing in
In the masque of the red tide
Bring your own and with the dawn
Two thirds of the food chain's gone
It's our final day; I've got something to say
Burn out, don't fade away

As the night grew old, we grew more bold
But friendly--less and less
The herbivores are gone, of course
Predators face themselves
Come with me to the Tethys sea;
See Pangaea split;
The sky is dark and the earthquake roars;
It looks like this is it.

Meteor's in the sky
Volcano's raining fire
And the algal bloom is washing in
In the masque of the red tide
Bring your own and with the dawn
Two thirds of the food chain's gone
It's our final day; I've got something to say
Burn out, don't fade away
