The Desert And The Snow

Story

It's a fairy tale for the digital age--people falling in love with the person, never even seeing the outside much less judging by it. Online romance can be a scary thing because you never know who the other person really is. On the other hand, all that's left is the personality, and ultimately the real identity is the only one. Between social conventions and learned body language behaviours, there's no less subterfuge in the real world.

This is a true story of me and somebody I knew. Although we shared an office in graduate school, we really only talked online. There we were, sitting four feet apart, facing opposite directions and just... talking. There never was a romantic relationship in the usual sense. In many ways, that makes this relationship more beautiful, being like all unfinished things much greater in its potential than any reality ultimately would be.

Lyrics

It’s a world of only words--Never spoken, never heard
Where we are dancers in the mist
What you say comes true; Be anything you want to
Have you been virtually kissed?

You don’t cast a shadow; step into the sun
My candle in the shade
Nothing will harm you; I’ll be here too;
Don’t be afraid

Come to me, be a flower in the spring
I’ll be the sun and rain, and you will bloom
The words in my mind say that nothing shines
As bright as you

Your life has its poles: the desert and the snow
Come to my land of sun and rain
The sand has dried the song you sang when you were young
Come here and dance with me again

Every desert blossom is as precious
As a seed beneath the frost
Day follows night like a ray of light
Breaking through the clouds

Come to me, be a flower in the spring
I’ll be the sun and rain, and you will bloom
Beyond the tan and white, blue and green are lights of life
You won’t be too soon

Come dance with me again
Come to my land of sun and rain
Dance
