Galaxy Being

Story

The original Outer Limits series was notable for several reasons. Two of them were the use of award-winning stories from mainstream science fiction and the stature of the guest stars. However, what impressed me the most was the compelling visual images. In a way, I think the profession of special effects was a much more demanding and creative one before computer graphics. What these people did with what they had was amazing.

This song is about the alien in the pilot episode, "The Galaxy Being". He had this eerie floating gait, a bit independent of the scenery around him. I'm sure it was a source of frustration to the special effects crew, but to me it was really stylish.

Lyrics

I was all alone; I always made my own decisions
Then someone brought me here on his 3-D television
Now I’m free
And I just gotta be me
There’s no need for your screamin’
‘cause I’m the Galaxy Being

I tried to tell them that I only come in peace
But they sent the military--Lord, what fools these mortals be
They can’t hurt me
‘cause I am made of energy
In spite of all the weapons that they’re throwing
At me I’m still glowing

Believe I’m really here; do not adjust what you perceive
I control the horizontal; I control the vertical
‘til I go home
Then I’ll call you on the phone
And if you want to come and visit me
Tune in again next week
