This Glorious Rock

Story

This was written because I wanted a swan song for filks. It's an attempt to capture a mood somewhere between "Sam's Song" and "God Lives on Terra", based on a travelogue of places I've visited.

Lyrics

I've never set foot on Trantor
Or seen the dragons of Pern in flight
I've never felt the exhiliration
Of flying faster than the speed of light

But I've felt the shock of thunder
And in the roar of the quaking land
I know I'll live and I'll die on this glorious rock
For I've held the world in my hand

I've spent years living here in Atlanta
I've seen Seattle by the sea
In Kentucky there's a city of underground caverns
The largest living creature is the Barrier Reef

The Valley of the Sun when the desert's in bloom
The waters of the Ichetucknee
Appalachian haze and snow on the alps
Have all left their traces on me

But nobody knows the best place of all
My backyard just after sunset
With a lump in my pocket
And dirt under my nails
I'd gone farther today than ever before
And tomorrow I'll take one further step
Oh I haven't seen the best of this world yet

I'm just a human; no angel,
No giant walking among the stars
This glorious rock turns me over again,
And if I walk all night I'll get plenty far

There aren't enough steps in my legs
To reach the end of this journey we share
So when I am old and I give you the world,
Do your best, be kind and take care

And five thousand years in the future,
Look back to Earth and understand
This magical time was the start of it all
And I help the world in my hand
