Golden Age Love Affair

Story

This is the story of Leigh Brackett and Edmond Hamilton drawn from the introductions each wrote to the Del Rey "The Best Of" the other.

Both Golden Age science fiction writers, the two married yet worked separately. Brackett may be better known for movie scripts [starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, John Wayne, and Harrison Ford]; Hamilton created the first design for a spacesuit and proposed using it to "walk" outside a spacecraft--decades before the Mercury astronaut program.

Perhaps it's a liberty, but I take the end of their careers as the end of the Golden Age--by no means the end of Science Fiction, but certainly a loss of history. There are very few people left who there in the leanest days of Astounding and Weird Tales.

Lyrics

[F#] The pirates landed on the [bm] shores of Santa Barbara
[F#] To pillage the village as they'd [bm] done a thousand times
[G] But they wandered around un [D] sure what to [em] do
[D] Because their captain wasn't [A] with them

[C] A 12-year-old tomboy [G] ran off and left them
[F#] Chasing after the [bm] Gods of Mars
[C] She was exploring [am] worlds too [G] fantastic for [A7] daydreams

[D] This is the [Dsus] story [D] of
[G] A Golden Age [A] love affair
In another time and place
Spirits were brighter there

Professors had high hopes For new engineering
But something else was lurking Behind those eyes
The grades of a college graduate at seventeen
Spoke of potential never realized

His nose in a book, his words were sharp as rapiers
Sold forty stories without one change
Destroying worlds to make room for the ones he'd create

This is the story of
A Golden Age love affair
In another time and place
Spirits were brighter there

The joy of creation seemed to last forever
But the great big world of reality intrudes
She spent her days selling words to Hollywood
He boliled the pot with comic superheroes

At the end of a long day they planted seeds
Now they're creating with hammer and nails
Exploring the world of marriage in modern days

This is the story of
A Golden Age love affair
In each and every day
Reach up for the rarer air

The days turned to years, and the wheel turned around again
Destiny returned them to outer space
She was tapped to follow the ways of the Force
The spirit of her youth now lives in Leia

Thirty-five years since he described man on a rocket
With all the precision of a photograph
In Florida he watched as our dream came true

This is the story of
A Golden Age love affair
In each and every day
Reach up for the rarer air

The story has covered fifty years of wonder
The plot draws together from opposite ends
They expressed their love by publishing
Their visions of the best of each other

Their final words were their first collaboration
Her heroes met his, and they made their peace
The Golden Age was ended in 1977

This is the story of
A Golden Age love affair
In another time and place
Spirits were brighter there

This is the story of
A Golden Age love affair
In each and every day
Reach up for the rarer air
