The Shadow Elf's Lullabye
Story
This was a long time ago--twenty years, almost. My friend commissioned me to do themes for his characters--he wrote epic fantasy. This is the best of them.
To me the most interesting part is the arpeggiated nature of the melody; I've fallen long since into a pattern of scalar melodies.

[dmin] Look fast: the Shadow elf will [C] soon be gone
[dmin] His restless spirit must [G] Go
[dmin] The clouds up in the sky re-[C]flect his changing mood in
[F] All of its swings as [G] he softly sings, sur-[amin]rounded by a mystic glow
In darkest daydreams of a Shadowland
He'll find his temper's only throne
Yet from his kingdom will his heart ever wander to the
Ends of the night, beyond mortal sight, for Nature can't contain his home
And so he [emin] wanders along out under-[bmin]neath the stars
[emin] Far from the people of the [D] world
[emin] Finding his wilderness that's [bmin] infinte
[C] Glittering like an emer-[A]ald
No chain can hold him; he will break all bonds
No person's love does he crave
Always immortal, spirit flying free above this
Life and this plane, he's always the same, and no-one heeds the name he gave
