Stay

Story

This is more or less a filk of Jackson Browne's update of the older song, but I did a good bit of rearranging on the parts he added.

The lyrics are a conbination of two separate relationships I had almost ten years apart.

Lyrics

When the (E) sun sets in the (g#) desert
The (A) Heavens catch on (E) fire
And it’s (A) too hot for a (E) young woman’s heart to (f#)burn (B)

So she (E) hides behind these (g#) four walls
The (A) curtains block out the (c#) light
(A) She's twenty-five, and I (E) don’t want to see her walk (f#) home alone again (B) tonight

So I play her favourite movie
Rub her shoulders, brew iced tea
But I know it’s these things she loves
Her heart is ice to me

We’re from (c#) different worlds
She’s a (G#) princess on a snowflake
(c#) Barely out of (f#)reach
And she (A) doesn’t even know
I’ll (E) do whatever it takes (f#) (B)

to make her (E) Stay (c#) (A)
Just a (B) little bit longer
Please please please please please
Tell me you’re going to

Now your Daddy don’t mind
And your Mommy don’t mind
If we have another show, one more
One more show... oh oh

She was sixteen and tired of waiting
for the next time I would call
I’d steal the time for a weekend visit
knowing that was all

Fourteen hours
Six hundred miles
For a Saturday of smiles
The glow of happiness melted the world away

But on Sunday came the tears
When a lifetime full of fears
Darkened our young minds
and it broke my heart
to hear her say

Stay
Just a little bit longer
Please please please please please
Tell me you’re going to

Now your Daddy don’t mind
And your Mommy don’t mind
If we have a little time, a little
Time for goodbye
