TelescopeStoryThis is my answer to "Lady" by Dan Seals, John Ford Coley, Parker McGee and Kyle Lemming. I learned it from a Dandelion Wine CD. Mine is drawn from a college relationship. In fact I did major in Astronomy. Her parents lived hell and gone from everywhere, so meteor showers and deer were not unusual.
Lyrics8/8/02DADGAE, capo 5 [a min] Drove from school to meet your folks So [F/a] far out in the [C] country Where the [G/F] sky was clear and [D] meteors [E] Fell as we sat in the [A] yard Do you [A] still have that [D] dress you wore? Do you [B] still wear that clip in your [E] hair Like the [G/F] night when you [C] stood So [G/F] still by the [C] wood [A] Holding your hand out to a [D] wild deer? [E/D] I was going to be a [D] stargazer [C/D] You were a free [D] spirit [G/F] Running with your [C] eyes closed I was [D] staring into [E] space And [A] trying to hold on [D] (intro) Equation education Nose in a book and eyes down Artificial light on indoor nights Telescopes you can’t look through Do we still have a sense of wonder? Do we still hear the distant voices That spoke to a child And made up his mind To live a life for the stars? I was going to be a stargazer You were a free spirit Running with your eyes closed I was staring into space And trying to hold on (break) The [em] telescope shows you what’s far, far away But you [f#m] can’t see what’s [G] beside you [am] I held your hand when we talked of our plans [F/a] The farther I looked, the more I needed to hold you [D7/a] You weren’t in my eyes; how could I show you [fdim] How [em] much you were [A] in my [D] heart? I’ve cut my hair and changed careers Smile and shrug when you ask why You have a house and a family And there’s a telescope of time Do I still look up and dream? Do you still dance the bacchanals? We’re looking forward to Things yet to do With the same eyes that recall I was going to be a stargazer You were a free spirit Running with your eyes closed I was staring into space And trying to hold on Lyrics index
