Story

The phrase came to me one day, under circumstances I don't recall. The story is fictional; I didn't know my grandparents, very loosely based verse two on a niece, and as for verse three, well, I've attended weddings....

Lyrics

[D] [emin/D] [f#min/D] [emin/D]

[D] He said, "I can [A] still feel her [bmin] touch [F#]
[c#min] Even though [G#] she's been gone so [c#min] long. [bmin] [A]
[Dmaj7] She was everything [bmin] I wanted to [c#min] be." [bmin] [A]

The [G] only time I [D] saw my [A] grandfather [D] cry
The [G] funny thing was [D] that he [A] smiled [bmin]
I [G] asked him what it [D] was that [A] tickled him inside [Dsus4]
He said, [G] "Feathers from the [amin] wings of a [emin/D] fallen [D] angel." [emin/D] [f#min/D] [emin/D]

I saw her when I came for my child
She said, "Take care. I'll see you Sunday."
We both turned away with nowhere to hide

We did not smile as we held back dry tears;
It's for her sake, we told ourselves.
We tried to do our best as she flew through the years--
A feather on the wing of a fallen angel.

I held her on her wedding day; I felt them
Lighter than a breath; soft as grace;
Quiet as a smile on a tearful child's face

She asked me what was on my mind
She said the past was in my eyes
I did not tell her what it meant at the time
Feathers from the wings of a falling angel
